Snuffbox

In the Frauenau Glass Museum

Really small works of art

In the Frauenau Glass Museum you can discover a large collection of snuff jars. In the Bavarian Forest, they are also called Bixl. These are small bottles that were once used to store snuff. Do you know the story of the robber Hotzenplotz? In it, the wild robber Hotzenplotz trades Seppel to the magician Petrosilius Zwackelmann for a large bag of "nose drops", as he calls snuff. I wonder if Hotzenplotz also had such a nice Bixl?

Nowadays, snuff bixl are very special collector's items and real little works of art. They were made by glassmakers in their spare time. They are known as "Schinden" (toiling) because the glassmakers still toiled after their strenuous work. The Bixl are often refined and decorated by grinding, engraving and painting.
