In the Middle Ages, the "Nuppenbecher", usually made of green glass, were the most common glass drinking vessels. They are also known as "cabbage cups" because the cup with its attached "nupps" is reminiscent of a white cabbage stalk. But why did glassmakers back then actually decorate the cups with the knobs?
