In the large hall
Japanese glass today
Traditional and ultra-modern, immersed in tranquillity and full of pulsating activity, fascinating landscapes and dynamic metropolises. Japan is diverse and unique, but above all, Japan is different - and that of course also applies to its art and culture. The Frauenau Glass Museum now delves deep into the world of contemporary Japanese glass art and gives glass from the land of the rising sun, characterised by its very own aesthetic, a forum in Germany.
The exhibition deliberately aims to trace Japan's original aesthetic sensibility. The artists from Tokyo, Toyama, Nagoya, Takayama and Hiroshima take on glass in an entirely Japanese way and create works full of Far Eastern fascination.
Right at the beginning, visitors are greeted by the "Engi" mirror installation. It is a "good luck object" that is supposed to bring prosperity and joy. In contrast, the glass "Blade Men" appear warlike at first glance. However, the sword here is a symbol of self-discipline. These and many other exhibits provide an insight into Japanese (glass) art.
