Gerhard Ribka: The boat in its sleep
Gerhard Ribka's work deals with themes such as memory, the dreamlike and the ephemeral. At the centre of his work is the interplay between the visual and the linguistic.
The exhibition at the Frauenau Glass Museum provides an insight into various groups of works from his oeuvre. Two-dimensional works are in dialogue with sculptural works and installations. The material glass is complemented by numerous other materials.
Originally trained as a chemist, Gerhard Ribka turned to glass in the 1980s. After training at the Mayersche Hofkunstanstalt in Munich and studying at the Royal College of Art in London, he initially dedicated himself to glass painting.
Gerhard Ribka has a close connection to Frauenau. He gave numerous courses at the Bild-Werk summer academy and was a friend of the glass artist Erwin Eisch for many years. A glass window designed by him adorns the medieval section of the glass museum.
