In the KABINET
From Bavaria to Beijing
Snuff was and still is a favourite stimulant in many cultures. A wide variety of containers were used to store it. In Bavaria, where numerous glassworks had their home, glass bottles became popular. These snuff jars developed from simple everyday objects into small works of art.
Apart from Bavaria, tobacco glass is only available in China - and has been for over 300 years. Soon after the Jesuit priest Kilian Stumpf built a glassworks in Beijing at the end of the 17th century, the first tobacco glass was produced. To this day, the works of Chinese glass manufacturers bear witness to master craftsmanship. They are coveted objects among international collectors.
The exhibition in the "Cabinet" of the Frauenau Glass Museum focusses on tobacco glass from China and highlights its development from its beginnings to the present day. The artistic small-format jars transport visitors to the distant world of Chinese glass and tobacco flavour.
